Artificial intelligence has become today’s new buzzword, with AI making its presence felt in every field we turn to. Whether it is for completing our homework using our saviour ChatGPT or utilising machine learning models to predict our future, AI is revolutionising our lives. This revolution can be seen as making human lives easier, or in other words, making us lazier. But while we reap the benefits of AI, a debate lingers: will AI take over humanity? These debates may have originated from sci-fi movies and comics, where we see robots taking over the world. But if you ask a computer science student like me, the answer would be an absolute no. Let me explain why by looking at what AI actually is and its capabilities.

When we say AI, we don’t just refer to human-like robots or personal assistants like Siri or Alexa. We refer to systems that can perform tasks by thinking and learning like humans. The AI that currently exists belongs to a category known as narrow AI, which is designed to do specific tasks that they are taught to. There are two other theoretical categories of AI: General AI and Super Intelligent AI. General AI refers to systems that are exactly like human beings, meaning they can talk, think, and learn like humans, with emotions and feelings. Super Intelligent AI goes a step further, where AI systems are more capable than humans in every aspect.

Now you may be wondering, if General AI and Super Intelligent AI exist, won’t AI be able to take over humanity? Well, the fact is, neither of these types of AI exists in the present, and whether they will exist in the future remains uncertain. Many scientists claim that the chances of their discovery are minimal. If you ask me, I do not think that they could be discovered, because every AI system existing now is controlled by humans. Every code or program that AI follows is written by humans, and AI is not capable of doing anything beyond what it is told.

On the other hand, AI systems prove to be beneficial in many ways. Today, every industry is looking to integrate AI into their respective fields. AI diagnostics, autonomous vehicles, fraud detection, advanced robotics, personalised recommendations, personal assistants, and chatbots are just a few among the hundreds of thousands of AI applications. Knowing how to code can prove to be helpful as you could create AI models yourself.

I have also had the chance to work and create AI models myself. One of them was a vehicle accident control system that could detect driver fatigue and stop the car immediately to prevent an accident and ring a buzzer to wake up the driver. This was done using a simple Arduino circuit. Another project I worked on was a Carbon Capture model that could capture atmospheric carbon dioxide to be utilized by plants for photosynthesis. The role of AI here was that it was completely automated. The device would only start working when the atmospheric pollution level was high. Along with this device, I also coded a machine learning prediction model that could predict the future level of CO2 for a year entered by the user.

So you see, AI is more of a superhero than a villain. While the idea of robots taking over the world makes for exciting movies and stories, in real life, AI is here to help us, not hurt us. Imagine having a robot friend who can do your chores, help you with homework, and even keep you safe! The possibilities are endless and amazing. So, let’s embrace the wonders of AI and use it to make our world a better and more exciting place. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be the one creating the next great AI invention!

Andrew Thomas B.Ed (Hons) M.Phil NPQH – Executive Principal Al Ain English Speaking School

Cognita, a leading global schools group, expands its international community with the addition of Al Ain English Speaking School in the UAE, welcoming a further 2,000 students and 250 staff to its worldwide family.

Cognita, a leading global schools group, today announced that Al Ain English Speaking School (AAESS), in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, UAE, has joined its worldwide community, further strengthening its presence in the Middle East. This marks the group’s first-ever school in Al Ain. Established in 1978, AAESS has been providing academic excellence in the heart of the UAE to a diverse community of students, from Nursery through to Sixth Form. The school, which serves 2,000 students and employs 250 staff, now joins Cognita’s thriving community of more than 100 schools across 16 countries, educating over 90,000 students.

Cognita’s growing family of exceptional schools already includes six schools in Dubai, one in the city of Abu Dhabi and one in Kuwait. The addition of AAESS brings the total number of Cognita schools in the Middle East to nine.

AAESS has grown from humble beginnings in a local villa to an expansive campus boasting state-of-the-art-facilities. The school prides itself on its British-based curriculum, tailored to meet the needs of its international student body, ensuring that every child is not only academically accomplished but also globally competitive and culturally aware.  Celebrating a legacy of expansion and innovation, AAESS continues to nurture the leaders of tomorrow within its vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic learning environment. The entire school community promotes growth, mutual respect, cooperation, and, most importantly, a joy for learning.

Cognita’s leadership in the region is headed by David Baldwin, Chief Executive Officer for the Middle East. David has extensive experience in global education and governance, including more than 10 years in the UAE, as well as supporting Cognita’s schools in the United Kingdom as Director of Education.

Speaking about this recent development, David Baldwin said: “It gives me great pleasure to announce the inclusion of Al Ain English Speaking School into our global family of schools.  This marks a significant milestone for Cognita, as AAESS is the first school we’ve partnered with in Al Ain. We are eager to collaborate in delivering a world-class educational experience, advancing pedagogy and empowering our students, staff and families to thrive in our rapidly evolving world.”

Mr Mohammed Al Ghussein, Chairman of Al Ain English Speaking School, shared the enthusiasm for this new chapter, expressing, ‘’We share a collective mission to enrich the educational journey of our students, ensuring they are well-equipped for success and contribute positively to the world. Whilst Cognita deeply value the unique identity and traditions of the school, they now open our classrooms to the collective wisdom of over 100 schools globally. It is exciting for the school to be part of something much bigger as it heads towards its 50th anniversary.’’

By joining the Cognita family of schools, AAESS educators and students are now part of a global community rich in knowledge, opportunities, and best practices. School leaders and teachers will also have access to advanced and bespoke training programmes, including those developed with the world-leading IOE – Faculty of Education and Society at University College London.

Claire McCarthy MD

Here’s something really simple you can do to improve your child’s chance of future health and success: make sure he spends plenty of time playing outside.

There are many ways in which this generation’s childhood is different from that of the last generation, but one of the most abrupt contrasts is the degree to which it is being spent indoors. There are lots of reasons, including the marked increase in time spent interacting with electronic devices, the emphasis on scheduled activities and achievements, concerns about sun exposure — and, for many families, the lack of safe outdoor places to play. It’s not just children; adults are spending less time outdoors as well.

Here are six crucial ways playing outside helps children:

1.   Sunshine

Yes, sun exposure — especially sunburns — can increase the risk of skin cancer. But it turns out that our bodies need sun. We need sun exposure to make vitamin D, a vitamin that plays a crucial role in many body processes, from bone development to our immune system. Sun exposure also plays a role our immune system in other ways, as well as in healthy sleep — and in our mood. Our bodies work best when they get some sunshine every day.

2.  Exercise

Children should be active for an hour every day, and getting outside to play is one way to be sure that happens. They can certainly exercise indoors, but sending them outdoors — especially with something like a ball or a bike — encourages active play, which is really the best exercise for children.

3.  Executive function

These are the skills that help us plan, prioritize, troubleshoot, negotiate, and multitask; they are crucial for our success. Creativity falls in here, too, and using our imagination to problem-solve and entertain ourselves. These are skills that must be learned and practiced — and to do this, children need unstructured time. They need time alone and with other children, and to be allowed (perhaps forced) to make up their own games, figure things out, and amuse themselves. Being outside gives them opportunities to practice these important life skills.

4.  Taking risks

Children need to take some risks. As parents, this makes us anxious; we want our children to be safe. But if we keep them in bubbles and never let them take any risks, they won’t know what they can do — and they may not have the confidence and bravery to face life’s inevitable risks. Yes, you can break an arm from climbing a tree — and yes, you can be humiliated when you try to make a friend and get rejected. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try; the lessons we learn from failure are just as important as those we learn from success.

5.  Socialization

Children need to learn how to work together. They need to learn to make friends, how to share and cooperate, how to treat other people. If they only interact in very structured settings, such as school or sports teams, they won’t — they can’t — learn everything they need to know.

6.  Appreciation of nature

So much of our world is changing, and not for the better. If a child grows up never walking in the woods, digging in soil, seeing animals in their habitat, climbing a mountain, playing in a stream, or staring at the endless horizon of an ocean, they may never really understand what there is to be lost. The future of our planet depends on our children; they need to learn to appreciate it.

So try it. Do what our parents did: send your children outside. Even better, go with them. And do everything you can to be sure that every child can do the same.

Tips from St. George’s University School of Medicine to make your University transition easier

As the beginning of a new academic year approaches, many students are preparing to transition from high school to universities overseas. This phase offers an opportunity to forge new friendships, mature, and transform their passions into career paths. Nevertheless, it can also be a source of anxiety as, this could be the first time, students leave their homes and familiar support networks, encounter new individuals, and adjust to a different educational setting. Balancing this transition can be sometimes draining and stressful, so St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies has compiled the below tips to help students cope with these changes.

  • Maintain Connections:

Students often miss their high school community when they begin university. It’s crucial to stay in touch with their social circles, family, and friends. Setting up WhatsApp groups before leaving can help former classmates keep in contact and stay updated with each other’s lives. Equally important is staying connected to oneself by acknowledging and understanding personal emotions. Journaling about experiences and feelings can help in feeling better.

  • Get organised:

Being organised can make the transition to university life smoother. Planning ahead, such as organising an agenda for the first week on campus, can help students settle in and manage their new responsibilities effectively. Extend this structured approach to other aspects of life, ensuring a balanced schedule between study and relaxation.

  • Avoid Comparisons:

Students might be tempted to compare themselves to others who seem to handle the transition better. However, this can harm their confidence and well-being. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, so it’s vital to focus on personal goals and progress. Maintaining a healthy perspective can help manage pre-university anxieties.

  • Connect with future classmates:

It’s beneficial for students to connect with peers who are also attending the same university. This can enhance their overall experience and ease the transition into a new academic environment. Building a network of friends before arriving can provide a sense of belonging and support, making the journey less stressful.

  • Learn relaxation techniques:

Learning how to relax is essential for managing stress, both before and during university. Techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, meditation, muscle relaxation exercises, deep breathing, and guided imagery can help students stay calm and focused, especially during exam periods and other challenging times.

  • Set Realistic Expectations:

Accept that it’s normal to face challenges and feel homesick initially. Setting realistic expectations about your transition from high school to university life can help manage disappointments and keep motivation levels high.

  • Engage in campus activity:

Join as many clubs, societies, and participate in events to meet new people, expand your horizons and discover new interests. Engaging in extracurricular activities is a proven way to build your own social circle and feel part of a community.

  • Seek help and guidance when needed:

It’s imperative to get out of the mindset that seeking help is a sign of weakness. In fact, the opposite is true so don’t hesitate to reach out to counsellors or mental health professionals if feeling overwhelmed with all the new experiences university presents.

To sum up, some students might find the transition from high school to university life a challenging period, especially if it involves travelling abroad. However, there are ways in which students can cope with the anticipation of making new friends, academic pressures, and leaving familiar support systems behind.  If students still find themselves looking for guidance, students can check if their university has specialised departments offering support to international students that may be missing home. For example, SGU has a dedicated Global Students Lounge that provides cultural adjustment support, a peer mentoring program, and other activities for international students to help their transition to university life smoother.

Brighton College Al Ain is celebrating another year of outstanding A Level results today which has resulted in the College’s pupils securing offers at leading universities around the world. Demonstrating its strength as a hub for aspiring medics, an impressive 50% of pupils have been offered places to study medicine, promising a bright future ahead for the latest graduates.

This year, 25% of all examinations sat by pupils have resulted in the highest grade A*, more than double the number secured in 2023. Similarly impressive is that more than half of all grades awarded are A* to A, and over seven in every ten pupils achieved A* to B grades.

Consistently included in the UAE’s best-performing schools list, Brighton College Al Ain and its exceptional teachers have gone above and beyond to support its pupils through the uncertain and challenging times that pupils have experienced whilst studying and preparing for their A Level examinations over the past two years. This support, along with the hard work, determination and resilience of Brighton College Al Ain pupils has seen young men and women excel in a wide range of subject options, encompassing sciences, maths, the arts and humanities.

One in four Brighton College Al Ain pupils have received offers from the prestigious Russell Group of universities in the UK and an impressive 73% of girls will go on to study STEM subjects, 53% of whom will pursue Medicine.

The College’s leavers include tomorrow’s students of Medicine, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Finance, Business and Film. Some of the pupils who have achieved outstanding A Level grades this year include the following:

Lucy Evans, Brighton College’s Head Girl, has achieved  A* A* A in Mathematics, Physics and History. She will go on to study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Nottingham in the UK.

Anas Asha has achieved A* A A A in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology and is heading to the UK to study Medicine.

Adrika Lal has achieved A* A* A in Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry and will go on to study Medicine in the UAE.

Hutham Al Taie has achieved A A A in Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry and will head to Queen’s University, Belfast to study Medicine.

Sabine Fintel has achieved A* A* A* C in Art, Biology, Physics and Spanish and will go on to study Architecture at the University of Cardiff in the UK.

Head Master of Brighton College Al Ain, Oliver Bromley-Hall said: “We are incredibly proud of all of our pupils’ achievements, which are so thoroughly well deserved. These A level results are the best in the College’s history and are testament to our outstanding pupils, along with the excellent teaching, care and guidance received from their wonderful teachers and parents.  Today we not only celebrate our top achievers, but we also celebrate many other A Level success stories, which we are equally thrilled with, and which may not obviously shine through in grades alone.

He added: “Academic excellence is the foundation of a Brighton College education and we are rightly thrilled for our pupils and their families. More than this, we are proud of our Brightonians as kind and humble human beings, confident that they will enter the next phase of their journeys equipped with the essential characteristics, skills and experiences that will allow them to flourish as leaders within their chosen fields.”

Showcases the next generation of musical talent

The month of May 2024, saw the city of Al Ain host an incredible musical extravaganza, the Young Hands and Voices Concert (6th Edition), where junior musicians from around the UAE came together to perform their hearts out to an eager crowd. This segment of the Al Ain Music Festival is a much-anticipated event amongst the community of Al Ain.

Over the years, this concert’s popularity quickly expanded beyond the local community, attracting attendees and participants from across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Ras Al Khaimah. Yaremi explained that the selection process for the concert is based on auditions where the performer submits a video for consideration. “This year we had a recorded number of over 100 audition submissions and 50 performances were selected for the final event from Uptown International School, Bloom World Academy, Diyafah International School, Safa Community School, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Gems Our own English High School, Repton School Abu Dhabi, Dubai College, Brighton College Al Ain, and the hosting school, Al Ain British Academy” she recalls.

The program showcased a diverse range of musical genres, moving beyond classical music to include musical theatre, pop, and choral pieces. A hard-working team of teachers were part of the event: Yaima Cruz Castillo, Dunia Gonzalez Romeo, Cleydis Tena Figeroa,  Rosa Maria Aguila Mendoza, Maridalia Fernandez, Aylin Aguila, Idorka Bracho, Ilya Netkach, Chiara De Paula and Sarah Martinez Rebollo, work tirelessly to bring this concert to fruition, supporting their pupils every step of the way.

Yaima Castillo, one of the teachers who have participated since the first edition explained that she looks forward to this concert every year. “I prepare my students for the auditions and root for them to take part because these opportunities are unique and unforgettable”. This is the consensus among the amazing music teachers who give up their weekend to be part of this event. Dunia Gonzalez another music teacher who has committed to participate every year said “I took part for the first time when I was teaching here in Al Ain, and then I moved to Uptown International School in Dubai.  I made sure that my students in Dubai took part in this concert as well, as I see the value of these events and how exciting these opportunities are for young performers.”

The Young Hands and Voices Concert was born in 2016 out of the desire of Yaremi Ledesma Alvarez, a music teacher from Cuba, to create a dedicated space for young performers in Al Ain. After graduating from Cuba’s Music and Art School system, she was used to performing in theatres, auditoriums, music festivals and events outside the school during her forming years. Yaremi explained that “This is where the true performing skills are forged, the confidence is nurtured and where the music student discovers their performance identity in front of the audience.” After relocating to the UAE in 2005 and working within the school music system, she noticed that musical activities were predominantly confined to schools. Recitals and end-of-year concerts took place, but there was a lack of opportunities for children to perform publicly, even during the Al Ain Music Festival (AAMF). Recognising this gap, she initiated the first Young Hands and Voices Concert in 2016 at the Al Qattara Art Centre.

The Young Hands and Voices Concert quickly became a staple of the AAMF, continuing annually and growing in popularity until the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the tradition for 2 years.  The concert venues have varied over the years: in 2017, it was held at the Al Ain British Academy Auditorium; in 2018, at La Dolce Vita; in 2019, at Danat Resort; in 2023, at Zayed Central Library; and in 2024, it returned to the Al Ain British Academy. The Young Hands and Voices Concert has consistently been the most attended event of the AAMF, celebrating and nurturing young musical talent in the community. Yaremi also acknowledged the important contributions by La Dolce Vita as the AAMF organiser to make these events possible. Music centers like LDV play a vital role in supporting the growth of young talent.

The event was another successful night of music led by children and their dedicated music teachers, highlighting the broad talents of young performers from all over the nation. Looking back to the concert and talking about the future ones, Yaremi says: “My wish for the young performer’s community is that they follow their passion in music and arts and take these opportunities to grow their confidence and refine their craft. Every minute spent learning an instrument or nurturing a singing voice is all worth it in the end”

Quotes from parent/ students

“My daughter who is 4 years old had a chance to perform, we did not mind the drive to Al Ain to take part because this is the type of opportunity that is inspirational for a young musician to be part of” expressed Rosa Maria, mother of Victoria, the youngest performer at the concert at only 4 years old.

Destiny Thor, a recurrent performer in this event since she was only 7 years old, sang a beautiful rendition of “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. When asked about her experience at the concert over the past year, she said “Although it is a challenge to step in front of a crowded auditorium to sing, the experience is very rewarding. It is exciting to perform in front of an audience and meet other performers from different schools”
